Good of you to ask, because we want to avoid the impression we hate having anything furry in the workplace. This could not be further from the truth, we simply love everything with hair and a heartbeat (and yes, this also includes our bald colleagues). But we are not as fond of PET water bottles, those plastic pests causing so much environmental damage – while tap water is the best water there is. That is why we collaborate with forward-thinking employers to set a new standard: the P.E.T. FREE work space and maybe this will one day even evolve into a P.E.T. FREE society. Spotify, Bever and the Design Thinking Center have already signed our P.E.T. FREE Pledge. Dare you join them at the cradle of a new movement?
Our objection to PET water bottles starts at their creation. It takes 0.25 litre of oil and 3 litres of water to produce 1 bottle of mineral water. On a daily basis, approximately 500,000 bottles of water are sold in the Netherlands alone. Our calculator tells us that this means those bottles come at the expense of 125,000 litres of oil and 1,500,000 litres of water. Throughout the world 2.5% of the total oil production is spent like water, errrrrr … to produce it.
Once brought into life, PET causes even more misery. Because it does not find its way to your cafeteria or nearest supermarket on its own, it comes with its own means of transportation and resulting CO2 emissions. For mineral water this emission is no less than 300 times higher than that of the same amount of tap water.
After the first mouth-to-mouth encounter, water bottles are cast aside even faster than the average one-night stand. After use, no less than 80% of the water bottles end up in the dustbin, or even worse: next to the dustbin and in nature. On our Dutch costas every 100 meter of beach is littered with 19 caps and 7 bottles. Much of this plastic eventually ends up in the sea and on the menu of hungry sea animals and birds.
Your P.E.T. FREE adventure starts with a magic click on our ‘sign up’ button. When you leave your details on the sign up form, we will confirm your participation and send you the P.E.T. FREE Pledge. This will permanently banish PET water bottles from your workplace and make them a thing of the past. As soon as you have signed the pledge, you have joined our pioneering movement on paper.Sign up
In practice, becoming P.E.T. FREE means that you and your colleagues will drink water. Yes, the same delicious liquid that can easily be obtained from a tap in your work space. Buying plastic water bottles and coolers will become a thing of the past and Jo from the cafeteria will no longer sell you bottled water, or the vending machine in your office for that matter. If you want to – but only then! – we can supply Doppers to drink tap water from for all your employees.
As a champion of change you will be provided with a platform. We will add you to our P.E.T. FREE Map and erect an imaginary statue in your honour for all to see. Or you can use our P.E.T. FREE Press kit to take the stage yourself. Remember, modesty does not get the message across. Finally, an abundance of karma kudos will come your way because your effort will create a cleaner work space and world.
